Cricket Magazine

John Ward has been looking at Cricket Magazine and gives detailed overviews of some issues.

The magazine Cricket ran from 1882 to 1914. To modern eyes they look quite unattractive, without photographs and text broken only rarely by paragraphs or drawings - most of these for advertisements. There were also occasionally some carefully drawn portraits of leading players. The first issue, dated May 10, 1882, will be covered in some detail, to give a general picture of what was contained in those magazines; in subsequent issues, only certain articles will be referred to. The aim is to try to bring to life those long-ago seasons and the players who were prominent in those days, through this magazine, mainly at the first-class level, so reference can be made to the ACS scores book for 1882.
