Colin Munford 1932–2026

Colin Munford, who died recently aged 93, was a long-standing ACS member, and the ‘oracle’ on county cricket in Suffolk.

It was therefore natural that Tony Webb invited him to be the Suffolk representative on the Minor Counties project. Involved from the start, Colin actually contributed to all 21 publications, also acting as the representative for Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire. For the later years, under the editorship of Julian Lawton Smith, he was the primary proofreader, and the high quality of the books is greatly due to his diligence in checking all the statistics.

His career as an accountant – during which he became Assistant Treasurer for the Borough of Ipswich – had given him the necessary skills to analyse figures for accuracy. Colin assisted in the production of the Suffolk County Cricket handbook for many years, providing all the statistics. He also produced a thoroughly informative book on the statistics of Suffolk CCC. His interest in cricket was broader than just Suffolk, however, and he would buy all the ‘Hard to Get’ scores books published by the ACS.

Outside the world of cricket, his hobbies included astronomy – he was a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society – and gardening. Colin was a devout Christian and was very involved with a local Baptist church where he gave regular sermons. He was always willing to help others and could be described as a real gentleman. He leaves a widow, Peggy, to whom he was married for 70 years, two children and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
