In 2001/02, the inaugural first-class tournament, eight teams took part in the National Cricket League, initially split into two groups leading to a second phase. The winner was determined by results in both first-class and one-day matches.
From 2001/02, when the teams were reduced to six, the first-class and one-day leagues were separated and each had its own winner.
The 2001/02 tournament expanded from six teams to eight again in 2011/12, and was split into two tiers from 2015/16 to 2023/24.
