A final was introduced in 1981/82.
Semi-finals were introduced in 1997/98, the only tournament in which there were also quarter-finals; the losing quarter-finalists were Ireland, Netherlands, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

† In 1988/89 New Zealand won a third-place play-off against Ireland.
In 2008/09, there were no semi-finals but India won a third-place play-off against Australia, and West Indies won a fifth-place play-off against Pakistan.
In 2012/13, there were no semi-finals but England won a third-place play-off against New Zealand, and Sri Lanka won a fifth-place play-off against South Africa.
